The UNO hockey team has announced that it will open the 2013-14 season on Oct. 7 with an exhibition game against the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology at 7:07 p.m. at the CenturyLink Center.

Mike Gabinet, an assistant coach for the Ooks, played defense for the Mavericks from 2000-04.

UNO opens the regular season on Oct. 11 with a two-game home series against Bentley.

Does anyone else think it's odd one of their goalies was a woman? Not because she can't play or anything, but because they also have a woman's team.....soooooo.....what? Why not just call it "Team A and Team B" then?

that would be Shannon Szabados, who is the #1 for Canada's Women's National Team... grew up playing against men. If she can compete, more power to her.

I'm well aware of who she is, you think I found all that out on accident? I did my due diligence. I'll reiterate, "Not because she can't play or anything." They have a women's team. So don't call it "men's" and "women's" if it's not men's and women's. Just call it "Team A" and "Team B" and let the best people be on either, regardless of sex. Don't call it "men's" and "women's" if it's not. I just find it odd.

Not that it's my fight or anything, but how was he supposed to know you knew who she was? Touchy.

It's not a fight, he just completely missed my point. I would have known who she was by looking at their roster and finding out there was a woman in the first place. The point was not WHO she was, but that they had a women's team.

I'm not real opinionated on a woman playing on the men's team, but surely we can see the sense in having a "women's only" team still even if they could play on the men's team? Even if it was Team A and Team B due to Title IX (If this were in America) we'd have to make sure 1/2 of the spots went to women... and I'm guessing most of those spots would end up being the entire B Team...

Your words were pretty strong pants for it not being anything much. I wouldn't have known who she was by looking at their roster, so maybe you wouldn't have either.

And in thinking about competition, a woman who plays for the Canadian national team might feel she gets better as a player by playing on the men's team. Even if she only plays in practices.

That's cool. Sorry I'm not "well aware of who she is". Maybe if I had done my "due diligence". Appreciate the info Chris. Only adds to the reason she was with the dudes.

Except for the semantics of calling it a "men's team."

And it's okay, a lot "journalists" don't do their due diligence either. I've watched a lot of faulty news in my days.

I think everyone completely missed my point. It had nothing to do with who she is, how good she is, Title IX, or anything. It was that there is a woman's team, and a men's team. I assume they were called that for a reason, otherwise why not just have two teams. It's all wording. If it doesn't matter that the women are good enough to play on it or not, why are you calling it a men's team, is that not insulting to women? If you're a good enough player, hey, we're still the men's team, the woman's team is the inferior one is what's being implied. I find it odd and unnecessary.

Go lobby the CIS to have it changed... but I think it is more a designation that men can not play on the women's team. Put it this way -- if you want to argue it under Title IX... all the rule says is that women must be given an equal opportunity to participate.

The "Women's" designation is used for rules purposes... think of it in the same terms as U14, U-18, U-20... you can play up... but you can not play down.

Why are we arguing about this anyway? Is she even on the team anymore?

"With the graduation of 5th year goaltender and 2nd Team ACAC All Star Shannon Szabados and the departure of Kris Moore to the CIS, a very big void had to be filled heading into the 2013-2014 season. Head Coach Serge Lajoie is extremely pleased to announce that goaltenders Ty Swabb (Edmonton, AB) and Kyle Birch (Winnipeg, MAN) will be joining the NAIT Ooks this fall. These two goaltenders will be relied upon heavily to provide the high level goaltending that will be required for the Ooks to return to their championship form of the previous year."
