| Is Fohr moving back to the old job he had before he became an assistant coach? |

Wow. Simply wow. Now THIS is an all-star coaching lineup.

Saying "Wow" doesn't do this hire justice. We now have three people who are qualified to be head coaches at the college level. Not to take anything away from Nick who will be at this level with more experience. He will be able to absorb knowledge from three of the best coaches in college hockey and will eventually be a head coach (maybe here in about 15 years). You have to assume everyone will be on the same page, coaching wise. National champs in three years (or less).
The problem with doing something right the first time is nobody understands how difficult it was. |

Let's not assume anything about everybody being on the same page. Guentzel and Hastings coached together 1 year, though Guentzel was an assistant for Dean Blais in 1994 for the US Junior team.
That being said, this is an absolute home run hire and a home run staff.

I can't believe there is a better three man staff in the country than we have now. With the better recruits we are getting already we will be a top 10 program in two years.

Is it blasphemy to refer to the coaching staff as the Holy Trinity?
I don't really care.

Absolutely mind boggling... This is without question THE greatest coaching staff in all of college hockey. Un frickin believable... Agree with Mikey on this one... top ten team within 2 years, if not this year... Pretty exciting stuff. UNO keeps on finding ways to freak me out. It's like they are 200% invested in winning a national championship... soon... Scary twizzlers.

I agree, best staff in all of college hockey. Glad to see Nick Fohr will still be involved as well.

| Great hire and I understand all the euphoria but any chance there may be some friction between Hastings and Guentzel on who is second in command and who would be the favorite to take over the day Blais hangs his skates up? |

What a nice problem to have. I think we worry about that some day way in the future. Till then, let's enjoy what we have. Are you a media (pot stirring) person tommie?

Fact is, if this staff turns UNO into a powerhouse and perneial contender in the WCHA over the next 3-5 years, both Hastings and Guentzel would have no problem finding a quality D1 head coaching job... I doubt there is any worry of in-fighting or mutiny amongst them... The goal is to build a first class hockey program here at UNO and when you do that, everything else takes care of itself. The hockey coaching community is a lot different than other sports. It is a tight knit group of individuals that for the most part, look after one another. You don't see too much in the way of jealousy and coach poaching like you may see in professional sports or college football. UNO is a premier coaching destination... we must realize this at this point. UNO is no longer the red headed step child of the CCHA. Clearly UNO means business and we can thank Trev Alberts and Mike Kemp for the determined posture to succeed in building a first class hockey program here in Omaha. This team will be something we can all be proud of for years to come.

Wow... the Mavericks players are going to be the best conditioned, highly motivated, most pi$$ed off team in the WCHA.
Regarding Hastings alone, a former Lancer (see username) once told me that he loved him as a coach... afterwards. But sometimes wished he (Hastings) would get in a car wreck on the way to practice.
Guentzel is of the same mold.

| If UNO needs any motivation for the WCHA they should look no further than USCHO and you can see all the WCHA fans that think UNO will just be a bottom feeder and is not ready for the WCHA. My favorite was in a post about the new assistant coach most were very impressed but then some people were like "He has had 4 jobs in 4 years, that is trouble." When you look at this last 4 jobs they are all pretty much lateral moves...definitely no demotion. Minnesota (Great job) Colorado College (Great Job) USHL Head Coach and GM (Great Job) and UNO (Best Job) So you look at all four, and they are all pretty even jobs. I think the WCHA might be getting a little afraid of what UNO is building, they aren't ready to let another team into their top tier. I am not saying UNO is definitely a top tier team, but it is building one, FAST. |

Mikey,
I wouldn't call myself "pot stirring"...was just raising the question. I agree it's a great hire and was just curious about the dynamics. Having been a season ticket holder since the beginning I want nothing more than to see the Mav's become a perineal power in Division One hockey! |

| Just curious, with Nick's title change, does that mean he is not allowed by NCAA rules to go on the road to recruit, and is he allowed to be on the ice for practices? |

No problem tommie, just did not recognize you as a poster. We get some "one post wonders" here from time to time whose only purpose seems to be to agitate.

This ended quite some time ago, ironically, right around the time Jon stopped allowing open registration oddly enough... |

quote: "We are very fortunate to have a coach of Mike’s stature on our staff," said Blais. "He has 15 years experience as a coach in Division I college hockey and has taught some of the best players in the WCHA in that time.
"Mike has even more experience as a coach in junior hockey and at the international level and has shown a proven ability to recruit top-notch talent. He will have an immediate impact on our program."
quote: "I'm excited by the opportunity to work with Dean Blais and Mike Hastings, two great coaches who are very highly regarded," said Guentzel. "I found out how passionate Omaha hockey fans were when I coached the Lancers. With the support UNO gets and the fact that the team is moving into the WCHA, this was too good an opportunity to pass up."

As a college assistant, he was part of two national championships with Minnesota and helped the Gophers to 11 NCAA tournament appearances. While in the Twin Cities, Guentzel helped Minnesota win more than 350 games, four WCHA playoff championships and three regular season championships. He coached two Hobey Baker Memorial Award winners, 13 All-Americans and 23 eventual National Hockey League players.
Pretty slick resume...

| Also a third coach with very recent USHL ties. It shouldn't be surprising to anyone if we continue to have as many or more USHL'ers on our roster than most teams. |

The USHL is the greatest talent pool available for college hockey too, so it will be the key to UNO becoming a Champion... Recruiting and 2nd to none coaches make for a scary, scary hockey program... for our opponents.
