Brett Brunteau's first game back in Omaha(CB) as a member of the Des Moines Bucs after being traded from Indiana.... Did not last long.
He slashed someone...either Conboy or another Lancer(i missed that part)....but then Brett decided to go ahead and fight Conboy at center....with full helmet removal...
NOT a wise choice....
Conboy and him went around for a second of dancin and then Conboy fired a WICKED RIGHT and knocked Bruneteau completely out....one shot....TKO it was pretty scary as he was completely out from the time he took the shot. Fell to the ice and layed there on his back...OUT. He had to be carried off the ice by teammates....I was directly behind the Bucs bench....and he was still pretty much out as they carried him into the locker room. ie: Total Destruction...
Bottom line.
One of the worst knockouts I have ever seen anywhere... that would include UFC, boxing, hockey, etc....
I really hope he is OK (he did not look even remotely OK) and I guaranetee he has learned a valuable lesson.
I am sure video will be available on youtube within a couple days...I will post when I find it...
Game also wen to a shootout with Conboy getting the winning attempt for the Lancers on the last chance...game over... the kid is money on those. I really hope he comes to UNO and does not end up getting signed before then...he is a horse...one of the most devastating checkers I have ever seen at the USHL level, mixed with bonafide offensive talent...he will be a solid NHL player someday...I honestly believe that. He has also seemed to gain a littl emore speed this year... I cannot wait to see how far he goes. I would also reccomend that unless you are 6'2"-200+ and an experienced scrapper...not a good idea to challenge this cat. His reach advantage combined with alot of strength does not bode well for the opponents.

From now on they will call Brunteau "Candle". One blow and he's out.
(P.S. I do hope the kid is alright.) |

The lesson to learn here is that when you a 5'11" and 180 you don't pick a fight with a guy who is 6'4" and over 200 lbs.
Not too bright. |

Everybody. But as of right now, he's going to NoDak next year.
He's a great kid. Very coachable and very likeable. The problem is that his career is micro-managed and where ever Brett goes, he brings that baggage with him.
Going after Drew is completely outside of Brett's character. I promise you there is more to this story than what we know. |

Maybe some history from Brett's time at the Lancers?
Anyway, hope he wasn't more seriously hurt than a brief nap. Fights in hockey can be entertaining and sometimes hilarious. It's rare that someone gets more than a nosebleed, but sizewise this was a mismatch. |

Agreed, the only issue Drew has when fighting is that he tends to get a little out of control with stability...he doesn't fall down, but is out of control spinning usually. This time...it did not last long enough to get to that point. pretty much they locked up...and then Drew thrw his typical full haymaker right from fully cocked back position...connected to the left cheek/chin area....lights out.

From the fishwrap I believe...
Conboy started the game with a bang when he accepted a challenge to drop the gloves from former Lancer Brett Bruneteau, who was visiting Omaha for the second time this season after being traded this summer.
"He hacked me in the back of the leg and asked me to go, so I said, 'Hey, why not?'" Conboy said. "I was very surprised, but I give him a lot of props, though. He's a good kid."
The ensuing fight, between the 6-foot-4 Conboy and 5-foot-11 Bruneteau, wasn't much for drama. Bruneteau swung first, Conboy dodged it and then landed a strong right hand that sent the Omaha native to his back on the ice.
Bruneteau remained there for about a minute before two teammates helped him skate back to the bench. He didn't return, and Des Moines coach Regg Simon said Bruneteau likely has a concussion and will be re-evaluated when the team gets home.
Omaha capitalized on Bruneteau's slashing penalty with a goal from Barry Almeida 44 seconds later, but the Bucs quickly answered with an unassisted goal from Taylor Matson 10 seconds after the ensuing face-off.

I grew up playing with Andrew (and his older brothers Tom and Tim) in Rosemount. He is a funny, easy-going, charismatic guy who turns to Mr. Hyde when he hits the ice.
He has always been a handful for anyone. If Drew decides to do something, watch out. In his freshman year in highschool, he dismantled a kids teeth from our rival school. He plays with a grit rarely seen, and he will remain a force for years to come.

Drew is now a traitor in my eyes as I still have yet to see a reasonable explanation as to how/why he could decommit from UNO after already signing a letter of intent(I thought)... He could have been a great addition here but chose to back out to go to the enemy. I don't think anyone around here likes that.

I agree that this thread belongs in the General Hockey Forum(perhaps noone would have whined if it were there originally), but why do you guys get so up in arms upon just hearing some news about something other than Mav hockey. Bunch of babies. I love the Mavs and I love the Lancers. Why the total disdain for anything Lancers? I really enjoy having a second team to support that actually wins alot.... Lancers have now won I believe 13 or 14 straight games and are 4 points ahead of Indiana for first place in the League and about 14 points ahead of 2nd place in the west...Sioux City. They are playing great hockey, have numerous extremely talented kids to watch and it is alot of fun. Conboy decommitted and that makes me mad too, but I still enjoy supporting the Lancers. I see nothing wrong with being a fan of both Omaha teams as you are talking about 2 totally different leagues of hockey. I enjoyed watching the Knights from time to time as well when they were here and I cheered for them as an Omaha team too. I was watching the Lancers play long before UNO came along, but once UNO started playing D1 I really developed a passion for the both UNO and the Lancers. I do choose UNO games over the Lancers games when scheduled on the same night. But looking at the Mav season coming to and end here shortly, I would encourage Mav fans who are hockey fans to go and support the Lancers when UNO is done. You will find the hockey enjoyable and you can cheer for a team that is at the top of their league.

I personally enjoy watching the Lancers and USHL as the future players for my favorite program at UNO come through town, and liked being able to watch UNO and CCHA alum play for the Knights during their brief time here.
I always found it curious how much time was spent bashing the Knights here. Yet at every Knights game I attended (I had a mini-pkg) I saw at least a half dozen or more UNO boys in attendance. Seems the boys appreciated being able to look at what it takes to play at the next level. Would think the Knights made for a good recruiting draw as well - if a scout was in town to look at an AHL player they would have been likely to catch a word or two on a UNO player.
Once UNO's first round playoff is over I'll have time to catch a few Lancers games before heading to Denver for the Frozen Four.
Look forward to it. Especially if someone Conboy's own size shows up to pick on him. |

It was great having AHL hockey with college hockey in the same town. We were fortunate for two years, I enjoyed being able to see Hacker, Zanon and Ellis play in person again. Also enjoying watching Center Ice with the Flames. Amazing how many former Knights are getting regular playing time.

I think you misunderstood. Jon and I enjoy the Lancers, and will probably catch some games once the Maverick season ends.
The main "Maverick" forum is for Maverick-related discussions (yes, including marketing).
Since Conboy is no longer a Mav recruit, I moved the thread. |

Made sense to me on why this was moved. I think Jon and Bridget do a great job of sensible moderating.

Yes, they are 4 points ahead. However, they also have two more games played then Ice.
I go to the Lancer games, I just don't always cheer for them. |

People are up in arms because he is now a traitor to UNO. You can go to as many Lancer games and drool over him as much as you want Bookman, but he broke a promise to UNO, and I feel it is perfectly fine to wish bad things upon him. |

Ellisfan:
You have to be joking, right. Let's look at the recruiting process as a whole. At the time Conboy was recruited, Doc DelCastillo (a former Lancer Assistant) was on the UNO staff. Obviously, Doc is no longer at UNO. Don't you think that any recruit (let alone Conboy) should have the opportunity to rethink where he is going to play hockey if one of the coaches leaves?
Second, obviously verbal commitments are completely nonbinding. UNO could have retracted their offer at any time prior to Conboy signing a letter of intent, and likewise, Conboy is not bound by a verbal commitment. Thus, technically, no promise was ever made, so nothing was there to be broken.
Finally, to wish "bad things" on any amature (Jr. Hockey or college hockey) player is completely immature. Junior hockey players are young men, playing a game they love, with the hope to get a college scholorship, and maybe, if very lucky, play professional hockey at some level after completing college. Don't get me wrong, there have been innumberable Jr. players over the years that I personally disliked. However, in spite of my personal dislike for these players, I would never, "wish bad things upon him". If you want UNO to beat Michigan State and UNO players to play Conboy ultra physical (beat legal), great, that's what fans should want.
Just my $.02
