Nice to see we're all set for the Bob Gibson statue. Hopefully more to come. My kids love seeing the ones at Kauffman.

I loved this comment on channel 7's version of the story...

I'd say hold it in mid June. While it can be hot it's not the triple digit heat common in July. While I did not go, I had friends and co-workers that did and they had a good time. I would rather see the event moved so Omaha could have another event to attract tourism.

Mid-June? Yeah....right...

I mean really...if they make arrangements, I'm sure the CWS will move times/dates.

It's a no brainer I mean....the people of Omaha DEMAND to hear whiny Indy bands b*tch about the weather and a life of oppression in the Midwestern suburbs. I'm sure the NCAA will understand. Frankly, how much pull do they REALLY have?

That guy is dead on

Things are starting to roll around Werner. Between this, the lake and the Good Sam home, lots of constructions on the horizon.

wow. sad.

I see a few of the outbuildings are still standing. Any idea if they plan on keeping those, or just haven't gotten around to demolishing them? I see the restrooms in CF are there and the storage building in LF.

Over at TD Ameritrade Park, they've torn out all of the infield grass, as well as well as some of the grass behind second base. I'm wondering if they are going to just leave it like this...and resod it after the Battles on Ice in February?

I can't imagine that new sod will like being smushed by an ice rink for two weeks.

I really like this from Shatel today, because he is right, I believe.

"Comment From Cookiedog X
Hello Tom, Is it time to admit that MECA's management of T D Ameritrade Park is a failure? The loss of the Sarpy Royals, boondoggles with Red Sky and the Nighthawks. Do you really believe that the CWS pays all the bills for the downtown park? Was it a mistake?
12:54

tom:
No. It was built for the CWS and the $35 million that comes into the city every year, for the 25 years of the deal. It certainly wasn't built for a minor-league football league or summer concerts. If you don't know why the Royals didn't play there, you either just moved here or haven't been to Werner Park. What it's time for is to drop the subject. "

UNO will be playing 7 non-conference games at Werner in 2013. I'd like to see this expand even more in future years. This is a good sign.

Great idea. I'll be buying the 7 game pack. What I don't get is why only the non-conference games? Oh wait, I think I just figured it out. The Summit League teams have to play at Boys Town, whether they want to or not. UNO probably couldn't get any non-conference games in Omaha if they didn't play them at a better facility like Werner Park.

Too bad that's likely the reality of it, because they'd probably draw better for the conference games later in the year.

I agree it's a great idea. The issue I think you start to run into with conference games is probably that by that time, the Stormchasers have their own season to start to worry about. Could things be worked out to allow both to play? Likely. But it may also be that the Stormchasers don't want to put that extra wear and tear on the field that early in their season either. *shrug* I think this shows that they're a lot more likely to attract higher level opponents in the non-con if they can play at a place like Werner. Good move by the Mavs to get this much done, regardless.

Family fans of the Stars, Mavericks, and various and sundry NHL teams! Happy to be here!

Please take a gander at my new blog, if you have the time! Notes and suggestions welcome. Crazy Corn, Bull, and Bird House

The grow omaha people this morning indicated we should be seeing some movement soon around Penant place. Papillion announced the new school will be just north of the existing development. 2 housing developments are scheduled to begin out there soon, and ground should break on the senior citizens living areas out there this year. With people actually living out there soon, they indicated they are hearing from shopping centers, movie theaters, and other businesses about opening up retail in that area.

I had heard the Grow Omaha report on all of the developments that are to start this year around Werner Park. Sounds like it will look a lot different in the next few years. The housing developments are going to be on the nicer end of the spectrum.

Promo schedule for the Chasers released today. Glad to see some of the weekday specials back again.

Someone was throwing around a rumor in Shatel's chat today that the Omaha Storm Chasers are hosting the 2015 AAA all-star game. I've read nothing about this, but if so, good for them and that should be an excellent event for Werner Park.

Now, the person in the chat suggested that they should move it to TD Ameritrade so that more people could go. Fat chance of that ever happening, nor should it. If the Storm Chasers got the AAA all-star game, they'd be foolish to move it away from their own ballpark. It might well fill Werner, but would be half full or less at TD Ameritrade.

I'm interested in the confirmation on this...and the details. As a Storm Chasers ticket holder, I'm excited to get tickets for this.

If they get the game, they definitely need to have it at Werner. That'd be fun to go to and get a program.

I'm not for or against Werner or TD Ameritrade. But the person that suggested that must be stupid. The Chasers would get an event like that based in part on their stadium. So whether it came down from the league or the Chasers, there's no way that event happens downtown I'm betting.

They are more likely to have that All-Star game at Seymour Smith than the ballpark downtown. No way on earth MECA would let that happen...you know, because I'm sure the stadium is probably booked anyway during that time.

MECA would happily open the doors for the AAA all-star game...for a nominal fee, of course.

But I think that it's far more likely that MECA will hold another outdoor hockey game in July than Martie Cordaro's organization would willingly move the AAA all-star game downtown instead of playing it in their own trailer park. Just not happening.

I'm assuming MECA would want something similar to what they charge Creighton. 10k for the game, they keep parking and control concessions. Would be crazy for the Chasers to move the game.

Plus it's an opportunity to show off Werner, McStadium already gets it's own publicity during the CWS.

Yeah, as others have said, I'm sure any bid by the Chasers for the AAA all star game is tied to the stadium.

Also, even though some may want to go, and there's a realistic shot that it could sell out and some people would be left out in the cold: tough. This is a huge marketing opportunity for the Chasers if they get the game. They will spend the next 2 years saying, "buy a ticket plan and guarantee yourself tickets to the 2015 AAA all star game." I buy a ticket plan. Even though it's a small 9 game plan, I'm confident that's likely enough to get tickets to the game, so, I'm just fine having it out there. If anyone else is concerned they may get shut out, buy a small package of tickets.

If they make the case that the only way you can guarantee yourself tickets is to buy a plan, they may see an uptick in sales. It may not be a huge amount, but that is likely their strategy.

They immediately lose that opportunity if they were to, hypothetically, move the game downtown. Omaha isn't going to fill a 25k seat stadium for the AAA all star game. They'd be lucky to get 50% of the tickets sold. It may not even sell out at Werner. If you've ever turned on the AAA all star game on MLB network, those games do alright, but I don't recall seeing them sold out with packed stands on tv.

The interesting thing here, is are their any requirements of further development out there to get the AAA all star game in 2015? I kind of doubt it, but it would be nice if something else happened out there in advance of this game. If we are going to put that area on national tv and bring in MLB network people, it'd be nice if it wasn't still totally undeveloped out there. It kind of sounds like something may happen by 2015 though.

I figure it could go on for 3-4 more years. That's when we'll see how all these baseball stadiums are doing after the newness has worn off.
