It's an intriguing hire; he has limited college experience, but his USHL and NHL connections look good.

With Leigh Mendolson out, that means there's another opening. And judging by how this is playing out, I have to believe it's Rob Facca.

He would be a solid addition to the staff...

Noel-Bernier should have been the head coach if they wanted someone "inside the program"

I worry about the chemistry between Dave and gabinet.

I'm looking forward to watching this unfold.

Sometimes "alumni plays" work. Sometimes they don't.

Miami's Enrico Blasi is a familiar example of an alum who has been successful as a head coach at his alma mater. Western Michigan's Jim Culhane is an example of a coach who never got things going in Kalamazoo.

Having known and followed these players throughout the past 20 years -- some of them have become friends in their post-playing lives -- it's exciting to see them given the opportunity. It should be fun to see what happens in the next few years.

It's readily apparent that UNO wanted to hire a coaching staff that is "all in" with their UNO "bona fides."

I do believe colleges and universities can benefit from an "outsider" perspective. And, it is sometimes beneficial to have a staff with a connection that is more "arm's length," in case things "go south" after a few seasons.

The program is still just two years removed from the Frozen Four.

I've known for a while that it bothered a segment of fans that Dean Blais never became a "UNO guy." I'll agree that there was an aspect of his demeanor that made him feel like a "hired gun"...

Unfortunately, I think people are missing the bigger benefits that resulted from his tenure at UNO.

Gabinet -- along with Noel-Bernier -- will bring a different perspective to the game, and bring a more youthful vibe to the program. UNO might benefit from that in the long term.

I'll be interested to see who the next assistant coach hire is...

I know some fans grumble that Blais never got UNO to the conference semifinals. But the truth is that Kemp never got UNO there either since 2001. And Blais moved that hill for UNO.

If somebody else was UNO's head coach, I'm pretty sure UNO would have made the WCHA semifinals at least once the last few years...because UNO would never have left the CCHA until it disappeared.

Want evidence of how the hill has changed? Blasi was a very successful coach for Miami in the CCHA days...not so much in the NCHC, where he has a last place and 5th place finish.

Yep... Miami (OH) only has one winning season in the last 4 in the NCHC.

Miami did with the Frozen Faceoff in 2015, even with their poor regular season finishes

Is it necessarily the best thing for the program to have a staff full of former players?

I think a better way of asking the question is "What are the chances that all of the best candidates for the UNO hockey coaching staff are alums?"

Each of these guys went different directions after UNO, so they bring different perspectives and experiences back to UNO. So it's less of a point of having an insular system, but rather to the point of...is UNO putting too much value on being an alum in their hiring practice?

Said it before, the most important thing for UNO to advance is effort, and recruiting. I think the effort will be there. Waiting on the recruiting...
