Marlin Briscoe, who played both football and basketball at UNO, has reportedly been elected to the College Football Hall Of Fame.

I've suggested this before, even in emails to Trev Alberts directly, but I think it's beyond time for UNO to honor Marlin Briscoe in statue form in front of either Baxter Arena or Caniglia Field (either would work since he played both football and basketball at UNO).

Briscoe is easily the most important single athlete in UNO history considering his accomplishments transcend simple athletic achivement.

I know there is a sense of not wanting to open old wounds with football and wrestling, but this needs to happen. It's a story that students at UNO need to know about, and need to be proud of.

Would love to see that. They had put a nice thing across the bottom of the pressbox/suites when football was playing there but it was removed when it became a soccer facility :(.

I threw this topic out to Damon Benning today on 1620. Hoping to get some in the media on board with this statue idea to raise interest. I may send another email to Trev today as well.

For what it's worth, I blogged about this same topic earlier today.

Nice post. Glad to have you on board with the idea of recognizing the single most important athlete UNO has ever had. This needs as much support as we can muster.

If there is any healing that occurs between UNO and the lost football and wrestling fans, that would simply be an added bonus. Although, I don't know that there is anything that can be done to salvage some of those relationships. It is what it is and we've discussed that situation to death. As mad as I was in 2011, the correct decisions were made. period.

As I've often said, I spent 5 years on that campus and had only ever vaguely heard the name Marlin Briscoe and I was a fan of the football program in the early 00's as a student. I often wonder if that has changed at all, but I doubt it. Something like a statue on campus would absolutely instill pride.

I think of the inscription on the Stan Musial Statue in St. Louis "Here Stands Baseball's Perfect Warrior, Here Stands Baseball's Perfect Knight." Marlin Briscoe would be the first to say that he was never a perfect person, but he was certainly the perfect knight and warrior for both UNO athletics and the NFL during a crazy time in our history. The NFL has always been better at honoring his accomplishments than UNO or Omaha as a whole. It's time to change that.

Got a mention on the Marlin Briscoe statue idea in Shatel's column today. Hopefully, this idea can gain some traction.

UNO has announced that Marlin Briscoe will have a statue on campus along with an event honoring him in September. Nice.

This is great news.
