For many years now, I have tried to warn you. I've told you that you have absolutely NO IDEA what kind of scum you are dealing with in the form of the NCAA and the billions of corporate dollars that are behind them.

I'm sure you mean well...but I want you to listen to me for one..final..time.

Are you ready?

If you do not build a new stadium...be it now or in the next few years..you will lose the CWS.

Period.

What the **** part about this is so difficult to understand? You're not dealing with the Boy Scouts or the Lions Club here. You're dealing with a corporation with the GDP the size of France, who pays absolutely no taxes...and will flick your dumb ass off the side of their sleeve as if you were nothing.

I'm telling you...nay...I'm begging you.

If you want the CWS to stay in Omaha...stop this idiotic campaign toward something you have absolutely no insight into. This is not comparable to where you should plant that new pear tree in your front yard. This is cut and dry.

Build it now..build it in a few years.

If you don't they will leave.

I'm not going to tell you again.

This year, they didn't have weekday games where they had to give away thousands of tickets to the school summer programs. Apparently that worked well for them on Sunday with no CWS game.

A minor league baseball team would really add to the ambiance in north downtown. When Nebraska has played games at TD Ameritrade Park, you get an idea of the vibe that could be commonplace down there throughout the summer.

Sharp and Benning made several references to UNO having "closed out the Ballpark at Boys Town era" last weekend.

It sounds likely that UNO may be playing all home games at Werner Park for the next 1-2 years while the on campus facility is completed. Considering the cost of renting Werner Park for 20+ games, we may be seeing some momentum building towards an announcement of the new on campus ballpark as well.

I need to remember to go...

Wonder when UNO will start work on its baseball/softball complex at Chili Greens.

If baseball insiders are to be believed, the funding has been ready to go for a few years, but the administration has indicated that Baxter Arena needed to be completed and opened first. I've heard they didn't want to start on another facility until Baxter was on its feet.

If that is correct, I would hope we would have some kind of announcement during the 2016 baseball season.

We will see.

Now, that is not to say that they couldn't do better. MECA is run by a bunch of morons...The Red Sky Music Festival was a sideshow act from the start and they totally botched the outdoor hockey game against North Dakota a few years ago. With better management, I think it could be profitable.

Whether it's a paltry loss or not isn't the point. It's still a loss. No one is disputing the economic impact of the CWS on the city as a whole...but at the same time, the average citizen doesn't see tangible benefits from all of that revenue.

This is simply referring to the arrogant claims by MECA and others that this facility would turn a profit with only the CWS.

This has now been proven false. And, unless peddling booze at the CWS creates a windfall or they find other uses for the stadium in the future, these numbers may only get worse as the facility ages and requires more money directed towards upkeep and renovations.

That would really benefit the area and the school - I'd expect nice crowds on weekends in the warmer weather with pre and post game stops in Aksarben Village. Sadly, I don't see it materializing before I move out of the area. I really did like the sports complex rendering that came out a while back.

The baseball stadium reflected a net loss of $167,000 last year. MECA was responsible for $100,000 of that loss. The rest was covered by the city.

Fascinating.

Remember when our city leaders swore up and down that the ballpark would turn a profit with only the CWS as a tenant? They said anything else they might put in there from Creighton, concerts, football, or even minor league baseball would simply be gravy and the facility would be profitable based on only the 2 weeks of the CWS.

It's seeming more and more like that was a "rose colored glasses" projection.

And, barring MECA landing a significant tenant, the losses on the ballpark may only go up as the facility ages and becomes more costly to operate.

That would be a huge no. heck the NCAA gets their undies in a bunch if they see any advertisements -- that's why they were so Mountain Dewed that boston was out of the rotation for years.

the nice thing is they actually split the semifinals this year, so plenty of time to go eat and drink before the second semi!

Obviously this is a trial. If it goes OK with the CWS you will see it rolled out to the Frozen Four and others.

Yeah you nailed it. Was relieved when they announced the new name for the charity. Once they did that I figured the name was not changing. I really like the powder blue hats and jerseys.

Was very happy they signed another extension to remain KC's affiliate. There has been a lot of turnover lately (crazy that Colorado Springs and the Rockies separated).

Greg,

I received the email yesterday about the announcement on November 16th. I did find the wording about "rededicating Omaha baseball to the 2015 World Series Champions" interesting. And, I'd go as far as to say that verbiage leaves the door open, at least a crack, for a name change.

I'm still not going to predict something that drastic though. I still say it would be a bad idea because of all the branding that has been done under the Storm Chasers name. Imagine all of the branding that would have to changed with a name change back to the Royals. Things like Ale Storm, Storm Front, Downdraught, Stir Up The Storm, Stormy, Chasing The Fun, etc. would all likely have to go. The cost of changing all the signage alone in Werner Park would be hefty. You'd also possibly alienate yourself from certain segments of the fanbase that bought in, literally, with hats, t-shirts, jerseys, jackets, etc. And, you separate yourself from the championships you won under that name.

No, I'm still mainly predicting a redesign of the uniforms; however, that verbiage or re-dedicating got me thinking. I'd put money that this is an announcement of an extention of the Omaha/Kansas City player development contract. A quick search confirmed that the current contract only runs through the 2016 season. Now would be the time for a renewal and it's not like there are any rumblings that anything would stop that from happening.

But again, I did say I'd leave the door open a crack for a name change. If that were to happen, I'd say it would probably have been dictated by the parent club as part of the contract renewal. Strangely, it seems the pendulum has swung a bit in minor league baseball. A few years ago, we were down to only a handful of teams using the parent clubs name; however, in the last 2 years we saw the LA Dodgers buy the OKC Redhawks and rename them the Dodgers. The Cubs also relocated their Single A team to South Bend because they wanted them named the Cubs. So, it's at least a possibility.

My money is on a developmental contract extension and uniform tweaks though. We will see though.

I hit it pretty close to the mark. No name change, but uniform changes and an extension of the player development contract with KC.

I know another big reason at the time for switching from the Royals is they have to share the merchandise profits with KC if they use the Royals name. With Chasers or other original names they get to keep it all. I'm really hoping they keep the name and just adopt a look more like KC. That email wording though has me wondering.

Greg
nousefouraname Posted - 11/05/2015 : 12:37:49 PM
I guess it just has the feel of sticking your finger to the wind to see what direction it's blowing if they did a name change now. You know part of the reason they wanted less affiliation with KC around 2010 was because it was seen as a moribund franchise locally. Now, it's the hot ticket. So, it makes sense to go back. What happens if the Royals go on another 20 year dry spell in the future? change the name again? I just don't like that. I'm a fan of building tradition, affiliation, brand identity. This hurts all of those things.

Again, if I was betting, I still don't think that's how it plays out though, but you have a good point on the ownership issue.

I did as well.

will be interesting.
Greg S Posted - 11/05/2015 : 07:46:39 AM
I got the same email. Could go either way. Agreed on branding. The only thing that worries me about the name change is the Chasers have a different owner now. They could not change it sooner because they already had the Chasers name attached to the AAA All Star game. Will be interesting. I registered to go on the 16th.
