On the eve of this year's college hockey season, I want to wish the University of Nebraska - Omaha (UNO) Mavericks good luck (and good skill). After being a regular at the Qwest/CenturyLink Center for years and a season ticket-holder for the past four years or so (ever since they announced plans for Baxter Arena), I have recently retired from the National Sprint Car Museum in Knoxville, Iowa, and moved back to upstate New York. I have purchased my season ticket for Colgate (past Mavericks Stampede champion) and am ready for the season ahead.

I want to thank Jon & Bridget Brooks for the mavpuck web site and the wonderful bus trip memories (Notre Dame, Colorado College, North Dakota). I want to thank John & Amber Sparano (HelmetHead Designs) for their friendship and my going-away present: a UNO Mavericks jersey. And thanks to Mike Kemp and Dean Blais (and staff) for all they did for the program (and my jersey). It was always a pleasure cheering for Omaha, especially at the Frozen Four.

Good luck, UNO, and I will be keeping track of your season on here and the uscho web site!!

My Facebook post today...
College hockey, unlike college football and basketball, uses a computer algorithm called Pair Wise Rankings (PWR) to determine the 16 teams (of 60 total) that are invited to it's season-ending tournament. The only automatic bids to the tournament are awarded to the six conference tournament winners. The conferences are Atlantic (AHA), Big Ten, ECAC Hockey, Hockey East, National (NCHC) and Western (WCHA). Today, both of my beloved teams are in the PWR Top 16, for which I am very thankful. Omaha (in the NCHC) is ranked 9th, while Colgate (in ECAC Hockey) is tied for 13th. Things will change daily from now until Sunday, March 18., but Go UNO and Go 'Gate!!

So far this season, I have seen Colgate (10), Merrimack (2), New Hampshire (2), Arizona State (2), Clarkson (2), RPI (2), Saint Lawrence (2), Harvard (1), Dartmouth (1), Niagara (1), Cornell (1), Penn State (1), and Michigan State (1). I would say, of those I've seen play, that Clarkson and New Hampshire are the real deal this year. Cornell probably is too, but I saw them barely beat Niagara at Lynah Rink this past Tuesday and they were not that impressive (although they did come back from a 3-1 deficit). Harvard, Penn State and Michigan State were a tad disappointing. Merrimack, Arizona State and Niagara were basically non-descript. And RPI, Dartmouth and Saint Lawrence have long seasons ahead of them, in my opinion. And, although I am a Colgate season ticket-holder, Colgate without goaltender Colton Point would basically be quite average.

Thank you, Tom!

We were talking to a business colleague this week (who most recently was living in TX) who just moved back to upstate NY, and plans to attend Colgate games (a team he used to cover) as well.
