preseason poll is out:

Denver 240 points (30 first-place votes)
St. Cloud State - 187
North Dakota - 172
Minnesota Duluth - 160
Miami - 104
Western Michigan - 102
Omaha - 83
Colorado College 32

thoughts? I think Omaha may even finish 8th...

I would move duluth down to 5 and miami up a couple spots.
I think miami is going to be the sleeper team this year...

We've had our struggles against WMU the past couple of seasons... and this year's version of the Broncos looks solid (despite the fact that they have 9 freshmen on the roster).

They were big and fast and got behind our defenseman too many times last weekend. I don't know if that had to do with "road fatigue" on our part, or if there are inherent weaknesses on the team that are starting to show. Too early to tell.

The good news is the matchup with NMU. A good opportunity to get back on track against a WCHA squad.

The past two seasons we've lost some key players responsible for putting up points for UNO. The last 9 periods UNO has only scored 3 goals. That stat is as troubling as anything.

We are 4-5-1 overall... 1-3 in the NCHC.

Happy Sunday everyone!

Disappointing weekend for the mavs coming away with zero points. bad matchup for UNO on paper and western looks like they might be better than advertised. big opportunity coming up with NMU coming to town...

UNO gonna struggle against the NCHC meat grinder but hopefully get a few Wins when the calendar hits january.

Not sure what to make with DU: on paper they are an excellent team and but talent alone wont win games. (see UNO versus UAH a few years ago.. UAH won like 2 games that year one was against UNO....)

UMD just needs to get healthy. they got some bodies out of the lineup.

Clarkson may just be legit after an impressive showing against cornell.

don't look now, but looks like BC has put together a nice little win streak.

disappointed in Harvard performance against the goofers. the Big 10 is obviously the best conference god ever made....

right now I think St. Cloud is the team to beat, but DU/UND/Western I would rank a close second...

Have a great week everyone!!!

Quinn you're absolutely right. As long as we "at least" split, and the NCHC has it's way outside the conference, we gain points. Especially if we continue to "at least" split with those in the top 20 non-conference...
Quinn Posted - 11/13/2017 : 06:43:21 AM
Good Monday Morning!

I'm strangely happy with a split at a much improved CC.

I would hope for another split at western.
western I thought would struggle after a lot of their guys turned pro early so I'm a little surprised at their early season success.

right now I would say DU and SCSU are 1 and 1A with a big jumble of teams in the second tier.

North dakota seems to have righted the ship somewhat.
and yes hockey east is still very bad.

The Blais haters tell me that Blais ignored recruiting the last few years. So I don't know what to believe.

I think Denver misses Will Butcher. heck he was only at DU like 8 years or something like that...

Never thought Western would sweep denver.

St. Cloud continues to roll. I know UMD was banged up, but the cloud is the real deal.

glad North Dakota got a win and a tie against becky. I just have an active hatred for the big10. plus 2 of the 3 evil empires are in that conference...

I liked Blais as much as anyone but didn't they hire Mr. Gabinet at like $250K? Don't think it was much of a cost cutting measure.
Mikey Posted - 10/31/2017 : 2:06:37 PM
The talent is there (Blais" upperclassmen). I am confident Gabinet will do a good job coaching this talent. We will see how he does in recruiting, the lifeblood of any program. I remember when Blais was hired and Mike Kemp said "He opens doors we didn't ever know were even there in recruiting."

The problem with doing something right the first time is nobody understands how difficult it was.
Quinn Posted - 10/31/2017 : 08:33:41 AM
currently the NCHC is 30-13-7 against nonconference foes for a .670 win percentage, behind the Big Ten (.671), a conference against which the NCHC has a record of 5-3-1.

really hope for a sioux sweep of becky this weekend.

For UNO -- it's almost blais never left! (that's for the blais haters out there)...

check back at the end of the season -- heck I called for the firing of rick comley and then he wins a national championship....

UNO is currently 3-2-1 thru 6 games... The Mavs started 3-2-1 last season as well.

Scoring by period so far: UNO outscoring opponents 9-3 in 1st, even at 11-11 in the 2nd, and being outscored 7-5 in the 3rd.

It is early, and it is hard to establish any sort of trend line, but UNO has been able to get off to fast starts this season. Putting up points is a positive sign early in the season (as is the team's power play).

Colorado College is 5-3 overall -- 4-0 in one goal games. Difficult to get a read on CC, but their early results look promising (including a split last weekend vs. North Dakota).

I'm waiting to see how UNO does when they have to grind out a low-scoring game.
Quinn Posted - 10/30/2017 : 07:11:03 AM
NCHC continues a pretty good OOC record over the weekend however hockey east is bad..

big early season contest between UMD and SCSU next week. SCSU is the real deal and UMD still trying to find their way.

Mavs get a bye week before traveling to a much improved CC team.

Every team in the top 10 they beat now will pump the ranking when those teams start to roll. Don't wanna split, take em home!

Excellent win last night on the road. games like this matter in march.

of course the swoon doesn't start until january so stay tuned.....

Pretty sure that this will be discussed this week. They seemed a little sloppy in the 3rd, especially in the last 3 minutes. Notre Dame is physical and this could be a very indicative series...
admin Posted - 10/24/2017 : 08:44:56 AM
UNO is getting outscored in the 3rd period -- 6-3 through 4 games (the 3 goals came in the ASU series).

Not really a trend at this point, but something to watch the next few series.

The team needs a killer instinct going into NCHC play in January. If they let opponents hang around well into the 3rd period, the second half of the season might very well look familiar.

I figure it's just early season rust.

But we saw a number of instances the past two seasons where UNO outshot/played opponents, failed to convert on good scoring chances, then let opponents sneak in and take control at the end.

Some have suggested that has to do with "systems" and "training"... They could be right on that, we'll just have to see as the season wears on.

In order to be successful in the NCHC, you have to have a "take no prisoners" attitude -- since opponents in the conference are loaded with talented players and good/experienced coaches.

To be in the mix come playoffs, we'll also need top-notch goaltending, and need one of our three netminders to steal some games.

The key question in all of this -- something that gets debated on sports forums like this every year -- is how much of that is "nature" vs "nurture"...?
Quinn Posted - 10/23/2017 : 06:45:46 AM
disappointing result Saturday night it's early yet so we shall see what happens over the season.

trying to go from blais system to another system is going to take time the meat grinder of conference play is coming...

Oldham nice kid but a traffic cone in net. I never was sold on him anyway.

other thoughts:

CC with a nice win at UNH.
St. Cloud is legit -- that offense is scary good.

Miami was my surprise pick to be better than expected, but loosing a game to a god awful Maine team is not a good look for them...

Big weekend for UNO... and the only home series until Thanksgiving...

It'd be nice to turn our home woes around this season (I think we've gone 8-18-8 at Baxter Arena since we played Arizona State the last time)...

NCHC weekend recap:

Good:

St. Cloud sweeps Alaska

CC sweeps Anchorage

Denver 1-0-1 against Notre Dame

Ok:

Omaha splits with Lowell

Bad:

Western 0-1-1 vs Clarkson

Duluth 0-1-1 vs Bemidji

Could have really used a split from Duluth, but overall a pretty solid weekend. As we all know these non-conference games for the league are so important.

Nice to see the pride on ice drop their 8th straight to UMD.

Guess the U is the 5th best hockey team in the state...

Big 10 strong in non-conference play last night....

In my mind, the 7th place ranking is based largely on our personnel losses (in particular, Ortega end Parizek.. along with the unknowns about the new coaching staff)...

But I think the potential is there to finish much higher.

Goaltending is a big key this season...
