A recent study of hockey cities by wallethub .com ranked Omaha 68th in a field of 72. We finished ahead of North Andover, MA, Waltham MA, Fairfield CT & Springfield MA.

For perspective, Grand Forks ND ranked 24th, Ann Arbor MI 23rd and the top 22 were all NHL cities, so this was a very NHL-biased kind of study.

Among College Hockey cities, we were ranked #50 out of 56 listed. The top 3 were Boston, Ann Arbor & Grand Forks. We finished last in the NCHC, behind everyone in the WCHA as well. I have the study bookmarked, I didn't post the link here, but if you want it, I have it.

Studies like these are kinda lousy, all about perception. Omaha is not perceived as a good hockey town. Also, if youth hockey was a part of what was being studied, then it shouldn't bee too surprising, youth programs north of here are strong, although Omaha's seems to be improving. And UNO is still one of the youngest teams in D1 hockey.

I'll take the USHL & D1 hockey in our little fly-over country community ANYDAY as opposed to the overcrowded upper-Atlantic rat-race communities who think food comes from a grocery store.
